Safety for Seniors Home Checks

Earleen, 68, lives alone on a very tight budget and is prone to falls. She heard of NHCO’s Safety for Seniors Home Checks and requested a visit. Two volunteers checked her home and determined grab bars would help her maintain balance while moving, and give her something to grab onto in case she slips. They installed one in her shower and another at the top of the cellar steps, free of charge.

“I’m really happy that I’m able to reach out to somebody for help,” Earleen said.

This program is a part of NHCO’s In Service Of Seniors Program. Volunteers visit a senior’s home to check for fire and fall hazards, install smoke alarms and make safety repairs and upgrades as needed. This is another way NHCO helps older adults in our community live healthy and safe and with dignity at home.

The program is also rewarding to our volunteers. “God’s been real good to me, and time to do a little payback,” remarked Jerry, one of the volunteers who helped with Earleen’s upgrades. “Ultimately end up getting more out of it than we give.”

“You can save someone a fall, or a broken hip, or an ankle, or a wrist or something, it’s all worth it. They’re all worth it if you can save one,” said John, another volunteer.

North Hills Community Outreach offers a variety of services that help older adults in our community. If you would like to learn more about our senior services.
