Current Volunteer Opportunities at NHCO

Services for Seniors

*URGENTLY NEEDED - Free Rides for Seniors Volunteers - We’d love for you to be part of our team!

Join our team and make a meaningful difference in the lives of older adults by helping them maintain their independence! The Free Rides for Seniors shuttle service is a vital resource, providing much-needed transportation that grows in demand each year. Our volunteers make it possible to meet this rising need, which means we need YOU!

We're looking for both drivers and onboard co-pilots. No special license is needed for drivers! Co-pilots receive calls, help the driver with navigation, and assist passengers with walkers when needed. Come take a ride and see how fun and rewarding this experience can be.

Drivers Needed
Volunteers are needed to drive older neighbors to specific appointments in the North Hills using the volunteer's car. This volunteer opportunity allows you to use our online platform to pick and choose appointments that are convenient for your location and schedule! This opportunity is a wonderful way to give an older adult the gift of independence.

Connect with an Older Neighbor Through our Friendly Visiting Program.
This opportunity would involve spending time with an older neighbor in their home, engaging in activities such as assembling puzzles, reading, watching TV, and playing board games or cards. Or, if driving clearances are obtained, you may take them out for coffee, lunch or even the movies! Preferably this would be once a week, but at least once every two weeks. This does not involve any kind of in-home health care services.

Tree Pruning at the Rosalinda Garden in Bellevue - Saturday, February 22
There is no need for prior pruning knowledge- we'll teach you what you need to know. We have hand pruners, loppers and one pole saw available. Please register at Tree Pruning at the Rosalinda Garden.

*if you can bring a chainsaw, reciprocating saw or any other pruning equipment, please contact Kate Robson at 412-487-6316 x3311 or kerobson@nhco.org.

Community Tabling Events are a Fun Way to Volunteer and Support NHCO.
Volunteers set up and staff NHCO's information tables at local events where responsibilities can include sharing materials, accepting food pantry donations, offering treats and providing activities for kids. These volunteers welcome potential donors, volunteers and neighbors who may need NHCO’s help.

Ask the Attorney Volunteers
This program provides 30-minute pro bono legal consultations to income eligible individuals for any non-criminal legal issues. Volunteer attorneys answer questions, provide information and help the clients navigate their next steps. Attorneys may volunteer for the person-to-person consultations or opt to provide phone consultations. Please contact Jackie Boggs at jmboggs@nhco.org.

Corporate Group Opportunities
We do our best to provide group opportunities when possible. However, we are limited as to the number of group projects we can offer. Corporate groups interested in scheduling a day to volunteer at NHCO should contact Lizzy Zimmerman at emzimmerman@nhco.org or call 412-487-6316.

Youth Volunteers
Does your school, or other organizations require Volunteer Service Hours? Start clocking in those hours early while the volunteer opportunities are available. Avoid waiting until the end of the school year when most of NHCO’s opportunities are taken.

Youth Volunteer opportunities include:

  • NHCO’s Rosalinda Sauro Sirianni Garden in Bellevue

  • Special events/fundraisers

  • Food pantry cart runners (at pantries that do not serve within the youth volunteer’s school district)

  • Hold Collections for NHCO’s food pantries and seasonal Sharing Projects

  • Grounds Work and/or building maintenance at NHCO’s Allison Park office

Volunteer Handbook

Please review our updated Volunteer Handbook online. This handbook serves as a reference to help you understand why and how NHCO incorporates volunteers. It explains requirements, fosters an understanding of our policies and procedures, answers questions volunteers often ask, and demonstrates how our volunteers are integral members of the NHCO team.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with NHCO. Please complete the online registration form and someone will get back to you soon.
