NHCO Celebrates 30 Years in Millvale

A Quote from Millvale Mayor Brian Spoales

"Where I always say that Millvale is all about families serving families, NHCO has been a blessing for Millvale as they are known to us as People Helping People. Their commitment to helping community individuals through difficult times, whether through free food pantries, assistance with emergency help during devastating rain storms, free tax preparation, utility assistance, and the list can go on, will always be a blessing for our citizens. NHCO is a gem of an organization Millvale is proud to have been associated with for the past 30 years. Happy 30th Millvale Anniversary, NHCO – Let's keep this going for another 30”

“Community” can be defined as “a feeling of fellowship with others as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.” NHCO IS community. Millvale IS community. And together, we build community.

Sue and Bernie, two of our front desk volunteers, are longtime Millvale residents. Fire Chief Cavanaugh and Public Works Director Joey Kypta ensure that our occupancy permit is current and that NHCO provides smoke detectors that the fire department distributes to Millvale residents.

Our Wednesday afternoon volunteers, Matt and Chuck, can often be found at Yetter’s Candy enjoying Moose Tracks ice cream after their shift. Gary, our volunteer on Fridays, visits Pamela’s at lunch to get his waffle.

Fox’s Pizza and Nova Cafe have provided lunch for many staff meetings and outreach events at NHCO. Both the House of Thrift and Vintage 416 have generously donated clothing and vouchers to NHCO clients.

Shaler Area Rotary donated in 2018 to ensure residents got new washers and dryers after devastating rain storms and continues supporting us today.

Millvale resident Melissa Mason has worn many hats in service to Millvale as a volunteer coordinator of the Millvale Music Festival, Resource Coordinator and tax guru at NHCO, and now as the Executive Director of the Millvale Community Library.

Melissa and MCL Board Member Jessica Landolina formed a neighborhood partnership with Christ Lutheran Church’s pastor, Erin Evans, and NHCO Service Coordinator Annelise O’Neill to contact Literacy Pittsburgh and bring free and accessible ESL classes to Millvale residents.

Millvale and NHCO’s partnership is based on respect, shared community, and fellowship. As Mayor Brian Spoales put it, let’s keep it going for another 30.
