Embracing Empathy: Reflections from our Social Work Intern

By Jess Miller, North Boroughs Intern

I have so many things to say about NHCO I don't even know where to start!

When I started my master's program in social work at the University of Pittsburgh, I knew I would be placed with a social services agency to complete fieldwork, but I didn't know what to expect from my experience. I have friends who have had great experiences with their field placements, where they were offered a full time position after the internship was completed, and friends who couldn't wait to be done with their field agency.

From my very first day at the North Boroughs office, I could feel how warm and welcoming each and every staff member was and just how much they cared about each other and the work they were doing. In the 360 hours I've spent with them since, they have become my work family and provided me with lots of laughs, hugs and treats, along with the professional experience and support I came for.

You can tell by the way that the North Boroughs team interacts with clients and each other that they embody NHCO's motto of People Helping People. I will genuinely miss coming into the office every week, seeing these lovely people, interacting with our clients, and even filling out and submitting utility assistance applications.

Thank you, North Boroughs Team!

(And a special shout out to Teri; she's a rockstar!)
