The simple act of a stranger’s kindness

As I turn 50 the memories that impact me the most are the goodwill of others. The simple act of a stranger’s kindness can make a lifetime impression. I have such happy memories as a child when my mom, sister and I would go shopping and getting an Icee and soft pretzel.

My mom didn’t always have the extra money for these luxuries.

“I don’t have the money for pretzels today. Please don’t ask for one,” I remember my mom saying one time at the store. While we were leaving, a woman was waiting for us with two soft pretzels. She told us she bought too many by accident and wanted to know if we wanted them. I think she overheard us as we entered the store.

I don’t know how long she waited for us, but her kindness has stuck with me for over 40 years. I think of her so often and hope she knows the impact she has had on my life.
