Eight North Hills Community Outreach volunteers from Duquesne Light recently conducted FREE safety checks in the homes of seniors living in northern Allegheny County.
“Safety for Seniors” volunteers ensure that there are working smoke alarms in the homes; if not they install smoke alarms. They also check: is there a clear walking path to the fuse box or circuit breakers? Are switches and outlets in good working condition? Is the oven free of flammable objects? Are the edges of steps clearly visible? Does the senior have a fire escape plan? If grab bars and railings are needed by the senior, those will be installed at NO CHARGE at a later date by a professional PA certified contractor.
NHCO uses company groups of volunteers periodically to conduct safety checks for seniors living in northern Allegheny County. If you know of a senior that could benefit from a safety check, please contact Cathy at 412-307-0069 x 3313.
Would you like to donate items that will help keep your elderly neighbors safe? NHCO is accepting donations of: smoke alarms, unopened packages of 9 volt batteries, rubber bath mats, night lights and night light bulbs, baking soda (used to put out grease fires), and bright rolls of duct tape. These items will be distributed to seniors during safety checks. You may take your donations to NHCO’s Allison Park and/or North Boroughs offices 9am-4pm Monday-Friday, or call 412-487-6316 opt 1 to make alternate arrangements.
