Volunteer Opportunities at NHCO

Citrus Sale – Volunteers are needed in January each year to act as group sale coordinators for our annual citrus sale, a key fund raiser for NHCO. Volunteers are also needed the first weekend of March each year to unload, sort, run or distribute the fruit (your choice). 2017 Citrus Sale volunteer sign up is here.
Pittsburgh International Auto Show – Volunteers are needed to staff a Community Auto table at the Pittsburgh International Auto Show each February. Talk to people about our Community Auto program and hand out information about donating vehicles. Free admission to the show on the day you volunteer for a three-hours shift. 2017 Auto Show Volunteer Signup is here.
In Service of Seniors– Provide rides in your personal vehicle, perform home safety checks or light yard work, make friendly home visits and telephone reassurance calls.
Receptionists – Answer phones, direct calls and greet visitors. If you can’t make a weekly commitment, we always need substitutes!
Administrative/Clerical Help – Make copies, send faxes, file, collate and help with thank you letters.
Data Entry – Help maintain accurate records. We provide training on various computer software programs.
Food Pantry – Organize and sort donations, or pick up donations at local businesses, congregations and schools and deliver to pantries. Cart runners are often needed at our North Boroughs (Bellevue) pantry on Thursdays. Helpers most often needed at North Boroughs and Millvale pantries.
Sharing Projects – Collect, organize, sort or help with distributions.
Ask the Attorney – Provide free legal help through Ask the Attorney.
WorkAble Volunteer Career Mentors – Help individuals find employment, learn computer skills and learn job interview skills.
Computer Literacy Volunteers – Teach computer basics to individual job seekers.
NHCO Speakers & Table Attendants – Get the word out about NHCO by speaking engagements at civic clubs, congregations, school groups and businesses, or by staffing information booths at community events. Volunteers are also needed to occasionally stock our newsletters, brochures and fliers in various community locations.
Fundraising – Hold a fundraiser or donate proceeds from an event to NHCO.
Free Rides for Seniors Drivers/Dispatchers – Drivers older than 25 and ride-along dispatchers of any age are needed to provide no-charge senior transportation on our two shuttles. No special license or training required, although drivers 70 and older must agree to have a medical release signed by their physicians.
Tax Prep Volunteers – Help low-income families and individuals get their best possible tax return. registration is during December, training is provided in January. Community Auto drivers – Assist in picking up donated vehicles from donors’ homes or test drive vehicles. Also groups may volunteer to wash or detail donated cars.
Bell Ringers and Money Counters: NHCO is an official unit of the Salvation Army. Each year during late November and early December, we need bell ringers to staff kettles for two-hour shifts at two local sites: Kuhn’s Market on Ferguson Road, Allison Park, and Walmart on Route 8, Gibsonia. Great for groups and families with children! Money counters are needed on certain weekdays at our Allison Park office during this time as well. KETTLE VOLUNTEERS: After registering, please complete the required Salvation Army waiver.
