In Service of Seniors: North is a volunteer caregiving program that helps seniors residents of northern Allegheny County north of the City of Pittsburgh, age 60 and older, remain safe and independent in their homes. There are NO income restrictions and services are free.
Before services can begin, a North Hills Community Outreach coordinator must conduct an in-home visit. Once that is completed, we ask for one week’s notice on all transportation requests.
Services are provided by trained, qualified, supportive volunteers who are required to have criminal background and personal reference checks.
We match each senior with a caring volunteer who provides rides in his or her personal vehicle to medical appointments, grocery stores and other errands, performs home safety checks and yard work such as raking leaves and shoveling snow, and makes friendly home visits or telephone reassurance calls.
We also offer, in partnership with St. Margaret Foundation, two no-charge Free Rides for Seniors shuttles along Freeport Road and communities of the route 28 corridor, and we can sign up seniors for ACCESS 65+ transportation services.
In Service of Seniors is a partner program of the United Way of Allegheny County’s Open Your Heart to a Senior collaborative. For more information, please visit www.openyourhearttoasenior.org.
