Volunteer

Gregg Brunner, NHCO's In Service of Seniors Projects Coordinator, is going to tell some jokes while convincing YOU to volunteer to help older adults

If you are not currently a volunteer at NHCO, an adult and youth registration form is on the bottom of this page.

* Unless otherwise noted, please contact Harriet about these opportunities.

Current Volunteer Opportunities at NHCO

MOST URGENT NEED - In Service of Seniors Drivers
We are looking for volunteers willing to give older adults the gift of independence. Volunteers are needed to drive older neighbors to specific appointments in the North Hills. Most appointments are along Babcock Boulevard and McKnight Road. This volunteer opportunity is incredibly flexible and works around your schedule!

Free Rides for Seniors Team Members
We want you on our team of shuttle drivers! The Free Rides for Seniors team provided over 7,000 rides to older adults in need of transportation last year and had a ton of fun while doing it! The need is great, and the rewards are even greater! Make friends, be part of a supportive community, and make a huge difference in the lives of others. Come for a ride and see for yourself. We would love to meet you!

Millvale Food Pantry Transport Driver
NHCO needs a volunteer to pick up donations from Dollar General in Bellevue and transport the donations to our Millvale Food Pantry. The Millvale Food Pantry is on the third Wednesday of each month, and these donations need to be picked up the day before (Tuesday). Our Millvale Food Pantry is located in the Millvale Community Center, 416 Lincoln Avenue, 15209.

Millvale Food Pantry Set up
One to two volunteers are also needed to help unload food deliveries and set up the distribution room the morning of the Millvale Food Pantry. This is a physical opportunity as it requires carrying heavy containers, bending and lifting. Volunteers are needed from 8-10am on the third Wednesday of every month.

Cart Runners for North Boroughs Food Pantry
After an individual has shopped at our food pantry, a volunteer helps them to their vehicle with their groceries. We need individuals willing to be cart runners at our North Boroughs Pantry. This opportunity requires pushing, lifting, and walking. The North Boroughs Pantry is located at 939 California Avenue in Avalon and operates the first and fourth Thursdays of every month from 2-4pm and the second Thursday from 4-6pm.

Sign up to Be a Neighborhood Ambassador
Neighborhood Ambassadors help attend community events such as farmers markets and holiday celebrations, fundraisers and more on behalf of NHCO. It is a fun, low-commitment way to be engaged in the community, and support our mission while spreading the word about NHCO. Please watch this video to familiarize yourself with NHCO’s mission, programs and services.

Volunteer Opportunities at the Garden
Spring is fast approaching and we need volunteers to help with weighing produce, weeding, trimming, watering, turning compost, and other maintenance tasks at the Rosalinda Sauro Sirianni Garden. The garden opens in April but we ask that volunteers pre-register for their preferred dates

NHCO’s Adopt-A-Highway
The season season kicks off on Monday, April 22 – Earth Day! Once a month from April to October groups register to pick up litter along Ingomar Road in North Park. In May, July and September we’ll also have groups pick up litter in Millvale. This is a great activity for families!

Group Opportunities
We do our best to provide group opportunities for businesses, organizations, schools and religious organizations. However, we are limited as to the number of group projects we can offer. Groups interested in scheduling a day to volunteer at NHCO should contact Lizzy Zimmerman at emzimmerman@nhco.org or call 412-487-6316.

Youth Volunteer Opportunities
We ask that a parent or guardian accompany those under 16.

  • Grounds Work at Allison Park - Volunteers help with basic lawn maintenance at our Allison Park office grounds.

  • Conduct collections for our Food Pantry

  • Seasonal special events and fundraisers

  • Yard work for seniors

  • Volunteer at our garden in Bellevue

Volunteer Handbook

Please review our updated Volunteer Handbook online. This handbook serves as a reference to help you understand why and how NHCO incorporates volunteers. It explains requirements, fosters an understanding of our policies and procedures, answers questions volunteers often ask, and demonstrates how our volunteers are integral members of the NHCO team.

Employer Matching

Many employers will match your financial donation in part or in full! Some will financially match your volunteer hours, too. Click here to see if your employer will match your donation!
